Loose Cannons – Writing On The Wall
Loose Cannons have delivered precisely the kind of second single that separates flash-in-the-pan hopefuls from bands with genuine staying power. Where "Never Be The Same Again" announced their arrival with atmospheric restraint, "Writing On The Wall" throws open the windows and lets the light flood in—though the view outside remains decidedly ambiguous.

The track opens with jangly guitars that immediately evoke the Britpop era's sunnier moments, recalling The Sundays at their most effervescent or Saint Etienne's guitar-pop detours. Ken's lead guitar work establishes a foundation that's both familiar and refreshingly unpretentious—this is a band unafraid to embrace melody without drowning it in irony. Then Lucy's vocals arrive, and the song settles into verses that shimmer with a deceptive calm, her voice conveying vulnerability without resorting to the breathy mannerisms that plague so much contemporary indie-pop.

The genius of "Writing On The Wall" lies in its dynamic architecture. Those chilled verses function as a trap—lulling listeners into a false sense of security before the chorus detonates with distorted guitars and layered harmonies that hit like a serotonin rush. It's a trick as old as the Pixies' quiet-loud-quiet formula, but Loose Cannons execute it with enough conviction to make it feel vital rather than derivative. When the full band locks in, with Chris's drums propelling the track forward and Olivier's bass providing muscular support while Olivia's keys add textural depth, the result is genuinely anthemic without tipping into bombast.

The guitar solo deserves particular mention—a soaring, emotionally charged affair that channels the spirit of 90s alt-rock without slavishly imitating it. Ken demonstrates admirable restraint here, allowing the melody to breathe rather than descending into technical showboating. It's the kind of solo that serves the song rather than the guitarist's ego, and it's all the more effective for it.

Lyrically, the band tackle the contemporary condition—that peculiar sensation of being overwhelmed by information while simultaneously feeling disconnected from meaning. The challenge of making sense of a chaotic world, and the paranoid suspicion that everyone else has received a memo you somehow missed. It's territory that could easily collapse into heavy-handed social commentary, but Loose Cannons wisely embed these themes within imagery concrete enough to feel personal rather than preachy. The titular "writing on the wall" becomes a metaphor capacious enough to accommodate multiple interpretations without losing its impact.

The production, while polished, retains enough grit to suggest a band that's honed these songs through live performance rather than studio trickery. You can hear the energy they bring to venues like The Water Rats and Dublin Castle—that sense of a band playing like they've got something to prove because, frankly, they do. The layered harmonies throughout speak to a group that's learned to use their collective strengths, with Olivia's backing vocals adding depth without cluttering the mix.

That live prowess will get a proper showcase come May 9th, when they take on Camden Assembly—a significant step up for a band barely two years into their journey. The venue's reputation as a proving ground for London's emerging talent makes it an appropriate next chapter for a group clearly building momentum beyond the capital's smaller rooms.

For a band formed only in 2023, Loose Cannons demonstrate a maturity that belies their relative youth. They've clearly studied their influences—the 90s alternative canon looms large—but they're not content with mere homage. Instead, they're filtering those touchstones through a distinctly contemporary lens, creating music that feels both nostalgic and immediate.

"Writing On The Wall" confirms that Loose Cannons are more than capable of delivering the hooks and energy that their live reputation promises. Whether they can sustain this momentum across a full album remains the question, but for now, they've given us a single that deserves to lodge itself firmly in your consciousness. Put this one on repeat.
