Kavya Limaye – Nuqoosh

The ghazal has always been a form that demands surrender — from both its performer and its listener. Across its centuries-long journey from the courts of Persia to the mehfils of Lucknow and Lahore, it has survived precisely because it refuses shortcuts. Every couplet is a small reckoning; every *radif* a returning tide. With *Nuqoosh* (Imprints), the young Indian vocalist Kavya Limaye steps into that exacting tradition and, on the evidence of these three ghazals, carries it with a composure that belies her years.

The name is almost too perfect. Gee Whiz! — that exclamation mark doing considerable heavy lifting — suggests a band constitutionally incapable of playing it cool, a gang of enthusiasts who've never once considered whether their love of melody might be embarrassing. And honestly, thank God for them.

Recorded on a warm August evening at a venue whose walls have absorbed decades of sweat, smoke, and sincere musical ambition, *Live at Your Local Waterhole* arrives not so much as a statement of intent but as something rarer and more valuable: a document of genuine pleasure. The Sven Curth Trio — expanded here to a quartet with the inspired late addition of keyboardist Chris Carballeira, who apparently required only one rehearsal to sound as though he'd been playing these songs his entire adult life — have produced a live record that does exactly what the best live records do. It makes you wish you'd been standing at the bar that night, drink in hand, wearing better shoes.

There is something quietly audacious about a Japanese band making the most Britpop-adjacent record of 2026 from inside a virtual reality platform. But then, The Submerged have never been particularly interested in doing things the conventional way. Their EP *Fabrica* — named, beautifully, after the 16th-century anatomical treatise by Andreas Vesalius — arrives like a love letter written to three different decades simultaneously, sealed with wax and slid under the door of a world that may or may not still exist.

Nobody arrives at a second album without scars. The debut is all adrenaline and the relief of finally being heard; the follow-up is where the reckoning happens, where a band either retreats into the comfort of what worked before or steps deliberately into the dark and digs. The Iddy Biddies — that curious Berklee collective orbiting singer-songwriter Gene Wallenstein — have chosen the harder, more honourable path. *The World Inside* is not merely a sophomore record. It is a philosophical manifesto dressed in corduroy and candlelight.

Dave Lebental has spent the better part of four decades doing things the hard way, and he wears every one of those years like a well-broken-in leather jacket. *Stylus*, his second solo long-player, arrives on the heels of *The Long Player* — a record that clocked over a million combined streams without the assistance of a major label, a PR machine, or a single algorithmically engineered moment of virality. That this Los Angeles underground veteran has managed to build such momentum entirely on his own terms is, frankly, the kind of story that makes you want to believe in rock and roll again.
Abaday – Nosleep

Twenty-two minutes. Eight tracks. Not a single second wasted. If Abaday's new record achieves anything — and it achieves considerably more than that — it is the radical act of refusing to overstay its welcome. Pop music has spent the better part of a decade bloating itself into forty-minute endurance tests, artists terrified of leaving anything on the cutting room floor, stuffing their releases with bonus tracks and interludes and spoken word passages that nobody asked for. *Lo Yashanti Tzohorayim* — translated with delightful bluntness as *I Didn't Nap* — arrives as a rebuke to all of that. It is tight, coiled, and ruthlessly edited, a record that knows exactly what it is and exits the room before you've had a chance to get bored of it.

Let us be honest about what the lo-fi label has become: a refuge for the indolent, a permission slip for the undercooked, a genre-tag that too often functions as a pre-emptive apology. Half the output on any given streaming platform hides its thinness behind tape hiss and a soft-focus filter, banking on ambience to do the work that melody and craft refuse to. Which is precisely why Koirah's debut EP, *Candles for the Chosen* — released under the rubric of the project he calls The Last Watchfire — arrives as something worth paying close attention to.
The Three Seas – Antaḥkaraṇa

The Sanskrit word *antaḥkaraṇa* translates, roughly, as "inner instrument" — the metaphysical nexus of memory, intuition, identity and soul. It is an audacious title, and The Three Seas have made an audacious record to match it. This Bengali-Australian ensemble, now fifteen years into a remarkable cross-cultural experiment, have delivered their most fully realised work: a sweeping, spiritually charged album that refuses to sit still, refuses to be categorised, and — most valuably of all — refuses to be merely tasteful.
