Now and again a record arrives that seems to have been carved out of pure need rather than ambition, and "someone" belongs unmistakably to that tradition. This is bedroom music in the truest, most romantic sense of the phrase — not a genre signifier, not a marketing angle, but a literal description of where it was made: on a laptop pushing eight years old, in a room in Western Australia, by a producer who has chosen to remain faceless while the song does all the talking.

Berlin's bedrooms have produced stranger and less lovable things than this. Kate Pending, working with nothing more exotic than patience and a modest home rig, has taken Luke Tangerine's original *Exoplanet* — a track already fond of its own nostalgia — and done the hardest thing a remixer can attempt: she has left it recognisable while making it hers.

There's a particular kind of nerve required to make a record that sounds this nostalgic without ever once sounding lazy about it, and melliejellie has it in spades. *ALL ABOUT U*, her new three-track EP, doesn't so much revive the Y2K sound as excavate it — carefully, lovingly, with a bass player's hands rather than a plugin preset. It's a short record. It is also, track for track, one of the more emotionally honest electronic releases to cross my desk this year.

Colin Keefe has spent his career behind the kit, keeping time for other people's songs in the band Woof. On "River," he steps out from behind the drums and lets the rest of us catch up. It's a single that arrives less like a calculated re-introduction and more like a door left ajar — you wander in, and by the second verse you're not leaving.

Three chords and the truth used to be enough. ViperSnatch understand this in their bones, then set about proving it isn't, not quite, not for them — because three chords and the truth, delivered with this much venom, become something closer to an exorcism.

A song arrives now and then that refuses to shout, and manages to say more for it. Mark Winters' "All In The Rhythm" is precisely that kind of record: a track built not on spectacle but on attention, the sort of attention most of us forget to pay until a trail in Zion National Park forces the issue.

Hip-hop has always had a soft spot for confession, but rarely does that confession arrive as a genuine dialogue rather than a monologue with two microphones. Hobo JoJo and Knottie, the husband-and-wife duo out of Woodbridge, have built "Spoken Thoughts" as precisely that: a conversation, caught mid-sentence, between two people who happen to share a bed, a home studio and, evidently, a great deal of unfinished thinking.

Tel Aviv has long occupied a peculiar position in the global musical imagination — simultaneously peripheral and ferociously alive, a city that absorbs everything and digests nothing wholesale. Shani Shavit, who has spent two decades navigating its studio corridors and live stages as bassist, arranger, and collaborator, understands this instinctively. *The Full Picture*, her album proper, is not so much a statement of arrival as a reckoning with everything that came before.
