Forty-four years buried in a rehearsal space in Dracut, Massachusetts, and yet these tapes sound less like archaeology than prophecy. Marc Soucy, Jeff Carano and Ray Lavigne convened for barely two years, 1981 to 1983, and vanished before the wider world got a look in. What they left behind, freshly unearthed and lovingly restored across eleven tracks and just over an hour, is a document that makes a mockery of the idea that progressive fusion peaked and died with the seventies.

Now and again a record arrives that seems to have been assembled out of spite for the studio manual. "Almost Nothing," the new single and video from the Kansas solo project NO IDENTITY, is exactly that kind of record: a three-and-a-half-minute act of controlled sabotage, built almost entirely from a handclap that has been beaten, filtered, and dragged through enough distortion pedals to emerge sounding like a bass guitar dredged out of a septic tank. It shouldn't work. It works anyway, and works with a swagger that plenty of better-funded productions never manage.

Paris has produced its share of heartbreak balladeers who wallow, who drag their sorrow through minor keys like a wet coat. Gabarit refuses that inheritance outright. "Adieu Morris" takes the raw material of loss — a name, a farewell, a door closing somewhere off-camera — and does something almost mutinous with it: turns the whole business into a strut.
