Disco never actually died, whatever the bonfire at Comiskey Park in 1979 might have suggested — it just went underground, mutated, resurfaced in Ibiza basements and Chicago warehouses, and waited patiently for someone brave enough to drag it back into daylight without irony, without air quotes, without a knowing smirk. Leopold Nunan and Andrea Ferraz are that pair of hands, and "Ready to Go" is the sound of disco stepping back into the sun like it never left.

There's a particular strain of house music that understands the difference between euphoria and noise, and VORALYS has clearly done the homework. Midnight Drive arrives less like a single and more like a mood you didn't know you'd been missing since the last proper summer road trip — the kind soundtracked by a car stereo, a horizon, and nothing much to prove.

Trance, as a genre, has spent the better part of two decades oscillating between cathedral-sized euphoria and cheap, synthetic filler, and it takes a producer of genuine instinct to remember that the two are not the same thing. Eric Kupper remembers. His reworking of "Do You Feel It" doesn't merely speed up Starry Venus's original and bolt on a kick drum; it excavates the song, finds the pulse buried beneath its cinematic origins, and lets that pulse do the talking.

Music built for the small hours has a particular texture: cold synths, warm confession, a beat that refuses to apologise for itself. "Have To Do," the new single from Chelle, understands this texture instinctively and wears it like a leather jacket two sizes too good for her.

Patience, as a subject for pop music, tends to arrive dressed up as either sermon or sedative — a lesson dispensed with a wagging finger, or a mood so becalmed it forgets to say anything at all. Naoko Hiranuma avoids both traps with a lightness that feels almost sly. *Surfing Is a Waiting Game*, her latest single, takes a piece of surf-camp wisdom picked up on a Fijian beach and turns it into something closer to a philosophy than a chorus hook, without once labouring the metaphor into the ground.

Bedroom auteurs make a specific promise to the listener: intimacy without compromise, craft without committee. George Styles, tucked away in Boston and apparently allergic to a stage for the better part of two decades, delivers on that promise with "Better Conversation," a single that sounds less like a pitch for radio play and more like a diary entry set to music — one you weren't strictly invited to read, but are glad you did.

There's a particular alchemy required to turn a teenage memory into three minutes of pop that doesn't collapse under its own nostalgia, and on "Something about you," the Irish bedroom auteur Shi-N0bi manages it with a confidence that belies the fact he's doing all of this alone, at home, presumably in his pyjamas.

Anxiety rarely announces itself with cymbals. It arrives, more often, as a hush — a held breath before the day begins, a heaviness that settles into the ordinary and refuses to leave. Nicindie understands this instinctively, and "Quiet Fear" is built entirely around that understanding: a song that whispers rather than shouts, and is all the more devastating for it.

Weather, as a metaphor for the times, has been worked to exhaustion by lesser songwriters and lazier sleeve notes. Donelli A.I. Ensemble picks the metaphor back up, dusts it off, and finds it still has teeth. *Previsioni del Tempo Incerto* — "Uncertain Weather Forecasts" — arrives as eighteen tracks that refuse to sit still, sliding between jazz, prog and world music with the confidence of a band that has stopped worrying about which shelf a record store will file them under.

Heartbreak has been strip-mined so thoroughly by songwriters that fresh ore is hard to come by. Elwood, a Texan with a voice built for empty rooms and last orders, manages to find a seam nobody else had quite located: the moment blame stops pointing outward and starts pointing home.
