There is a particular kind of British band that emerges every few years from somewhere that isn't London, Manchester or anywhere else the weekly papers consider interesting. They have no manifesto, no stylist and no discernible interest in the algorithm. They simply plug in, turn up and play as if the building might be demolished at midnight. MUTE TV, a Bath trio barely a year old, are that band, and "Broken Drum" is the sound of them knowing it.

Heartbreak songs usually shout. The tradition runs from the torch singer to the stadium balladeer, and it assumes that grief must be loud to be believed. Brandes goes the other way. "Behind Your Eyes" is a murmur, a confidence passed across a kitchen table late at night, and it has more force than most of its bigger-voiced rivals.

Regret is the most flattering light in pop. It softens every edge, gilds every doorway, and persuades us that the person who left was always the one. Most songs about it wallow. A rare few sit quietly in the dusk of the thing and simply look. NBP Human's "All My Mind Is on You" belongs to the second kind, and it is a lovely, unshowy piece of work.
