Some records announce themselves with a shrug. Others arrive dragging a shopping trolley full of ideas behind them, rattling and overloaded, and dare you to keep pace. "Pan-Handlin' Views" belongs firmly to the second camp — a bright, manic, deceptively substantial piece of comedy rap that treats the collapse of the music industry's old scaffolding not as tragedy but as farce, and does so with a wink sharp enough to draw blood.

There is a particular species of record that arrives not as product but as confession, and *War Torn* — the debut curatorial statement from Doha-based producer HZPROD — belongs unmistakably to that lineage. It is the sound of a man who has spent years behind the boards for other people finally stepping forward to say something only he could say, and doing so not with a microphone but with a Rolodex, a conscience, and, by his own account, twenty grand of his own money.

Somewhere on a dead-straight stretch of road in outback New South Wales, a man behind the wheel of a Kenworth B-double watches a feedlot slide past his window and feels the hairs go up on his arms. Out of that unglamorous, faintly biblical moment of dread comes "Hells Gate," the third cut from Rob Fletcher's *Love Storm*, and easily the record's most persuasive argument for itself.
