The hats skitter around it with the nervous energy of teenagers outside a club they are not quite old enough to enter. Anyone who has ever spent a Sunday morning in a car park with the bass still ringing in their ribs will recognise the feeling at once. The duo don’t treat the 909 as a museum piece, though. They treat it as a mate.

The sleight of hand is in what they pile on top. Where lesser revivalists would polish the old sounds into a nostalgic gloss, Meas & Riddie bring in newer synths that glitter, sulk and occasionally snarl. Together these form the record’s real subject: the argument, and the eventual handshake, between yesterday’s machinery and today’s. The synth lines slide in sideways, bend slightly out of tune with expectation, then snap back into the groove just as you start to doubt them. It is a trick that Orbital, Leftfield and the Chemical Brothers all mastered in their day, and it is a delight to hear it practised by people who were presumably still in short trousers when those records were being made.

Their press note says they make music “how they like it, their own way”, and for once the claim holds up. “Keep T Moving” carries no whiff of committee, no focus-grouped drop engineered to detonate on a streaming playlist. It has the lopsided charm of a record made in a bedroom by two people who simply could not stop. The arrangement breathes. Tension is built with patience, a rare virtue in a genre that often confuses volume with drama, and released with a grin rather than a roar. When the full weight of the track finally lands, it does so with the glee of a prank rather than the solemnity of a sermon.

That sense of play matters. Dance music has spent a good while taking itself far too seriously, all brooding monochrome sleeves and furrowed brows. This is music that wants you in motion, and the title is both instruction and promise. It is the sound of a pair of brothers who have worked out that the best way to win an argument is to build a groove so good that nobody remembers what the argument was about.

The word “first” appears in every account of this single, and it is the most tantalising part of the story. If this is the opening statement, the follow-up could be something special. The old drum machine has found two new champions, the synths have found two willing conspirators, and the dance floor has found a reason to believe in brotherly love.

Stay tuned, as the lads say. On this evidence, you would be mad not to.

The Roland TR-909 is nearly forty years old and has been declared dead, buried and sampled posthumously more times than any machine in history.
