Bryan KuKes, evidently a young man of fine instincts, urged his father to try his hand at contemporary pop for today’s youth. A lesser songwriter would have sulked, or reached for the big band arrangements. Barry instead retreated to his home studio, hummed his melodies into AI software like a man whispering secrets to the future, and spent long hours carving the results into shape with Audacity. It is the sort of bedroom-auteur romance that gave us half the great records of the last thirty years. That it happens to involve a baby boomer, a laptop and a Florida garage only makes it better.

And what emerges? A record of startling confidence. The central song, a female voice pleading to be kept all night because the pleasure of her lover’s company is simply too good to abandon, is pure pop economy: one idea, honestly stated, repeated until it feels like a law of nature. There is no irony here and no smirking at the genre. KuKes writes desire the way the great songwriters of the Brill Building did, as joyous and slightly breathless, utterly unembarrassed. Lyrically, he never overreaches. He knows the dancefloor is no place for a thesis.

The drums, naturally, are the quiet triumph. KuKes brings the discipline of a lifelong timekeeper to a genre that too often mistakes mechanical for rhythmic. Beneath the glossy, AI-assisted sheen, you can feel a human pulse, steady and unshowy, like a heartbeat under a sequin jacket. The stems have been edited with the meticulousness of a man who has spent decades knowing exactly where beat one lives. Nothing wobbles. Everything breathes.

There is a larger point here, too. Pop has always belonged to the curious, not just the young. Here is a man with eight albums, seven books and a Christmas story downloaded over 25,000 times, who could have coasted gracefully into the sunset with another smooth jazz collection. Instead he took his son’s challenge, learned a new language and, to his enormous credit, learned to speak it fluently.

*Songs for Bryan* is a love letter in two directions: to a son who believed his father had one more surprise in him, and to a dancefloor that, it turns out, has room for everyone. Keep him all night, indeed. I’d happily keep this record on for a good deal longer.

https://www.minicooperproductions.com/

There is a particular species of pop miracle that occurs when a man who has spent fifty years behind a drum kit is finally told by his son to come out from behind it. Not literally, mind you. Barry KuKes remains, by his own admission, a back-of-the-stage creature, more comfortable keeping time for his cover bands than stalking the footlights. But with *Songs for Bryan*, released this week, the Port Orange, Florida veteran has done something altogether more daring. He has made a dance record, and it is a thoroughly disarming one.

{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

3
65,9
post-40980","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-album-reviews","tag-electronic-pop","tag-usa
https://indiedockmusicblog.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/songs_for_bryan_album_cover_copy-scaled.jpg
["GET
