Written in Brussels by Benjamin Decraene and recorded in a New York bedroom, the track has the peculiar honesty of something made without an audience in mind — which is, of course, the only way anything honest ever gets made. You can hear the room. Not metaphorically, though the title insists on that reading too, but literally: the closeness of the mic, the late-night hush pressing against the vocal, the sense that whoever sang this did so with the lights off and nobody listening.

That’s the song’s great gamble, and it pays off. Where so much contemporary indie pop reaches for maximalism — walls of synth, layered harmonies stacked until the emotion is unmissable — this record does the opposite. It leaves gaps. It lets silence sit where a chorus swell might normally go. The comparison points offered up front, Patrick Watson, SYML, Tammy Adams, are useful less as sonic templates than as a statement of allegiance: these are all artists who treat restraint as a compositional tool rather than a limitation. Alone New Yorker has clearly studied that lesson and internalised it rather than imitated it.

The title itself deserves more credit than titles usually earn. A room with no corners is a small, strange, almost architecturally impossible image — something curved, continuous, inescapable. It’s a neat trick of language that mirrors exactly the psychological state the song is chasing: that particular late-night feeling when solitude stops being a location and becomes a condition, when the four walls of wherever you happen to be sitting dissolve into something closer to a mood than a room. Decraene’s lyric doesn’t over-explain this. It trusts the listener to arrive at the feeling sideways, through suggestion rather than exposition, which is precisely the register the production supports.

Worth noting, too, is the candour around method. The artist admits to using AI-assisted tools during parts of the arrangement and sound design, framing them not as a shortcut around craft but as a budget-conscious extension of it — while insisting the vocals, lyrics, and composition stayed stubbornly human-led. It’s a refreshingly unguarded admission in a climate where most acts either hide the tool entirely or lean on it as a gimmick. Here it barely registers, because the song never asks you to notice; the texture stays warm, imperfect, clearly the product of a person deciding when to stop rather than a machine deciding for them.

“Room with no corners” doesn’t chase a hook. It builds a mood and trusts you to stay inside it. Given how rarely singles trust their listeners with anything, that alone marks Alone New Yorker as an artist worth watching — assuming, of course, you’ll ever get to see them.

https://anycmusic.com/

https://alonenewyorker.bandcamp.com/track/room-with-no-corners

Anonymity, in pop music, usually announces itself as costume — a mask worn for mystique, dropped the moment fame demands a face.
