Musically it refuses to sit still, which suits the subject matter. Indie soul slides into lo-fi folk slides into dream pop slides into something closer to alt hip-hop, and rather than sounding scattershot, it plays like a man trying on different rooms in a house he no longer recognises \u2014 which, narratively, is more or less exactly what’s happening. The tangent-universe conceit, streets that look right but aren’t, a dog answering to the wrong name, a friend’s wedding vows looping like a stuck memory, gives the record a genuinely unsettling emotional physics. Klein isn’t writing about moving on. He’s writing about the moment before you realise you can’t go back, which is a far more interesting and far less comfortable place to sit.<\/p>
Lead single “VOICES” earns its position at the front of the record, but the more telling moments come in the textures underneath: an Allen Ginsberg interpolation threaded through like a half-remembered sermon, sampled beach wedding vows drifting in like a tide nobody asked for, mellotron strings doing the slow, patient work of watching a relationship come apart in real time. Nothing here reaches for a big cathartic swell; instead it accumulates, the way actual grief does, in small unbearable details rather than orchestral crescendos.<\/span><\/p> Chris Gehringer’s mastering gives the whole thing room to breathe without smoothing off its rougher edges, which matters \u2014 this is a record that was tracked between a home studio, a piano rescued in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, and his parents’ house outside Pittsburgh, and you can hear that itinerant, hand-assembled quality throughout. It sounds lived-in rather than polished, which is precisely the point.<\/span><\/p> By the time it closes, *DOGSTAR 1* has done something genuinely difficult: turned a catalogue of specific, personal disasters into a record that feels expansive rather than claustrophobic, generous rather than self-pitying. It sits with its losses instead of running from them, and finds, somewhere in that stillness, the outline of a way forward.
