None of it would land, though, without Kim Rysstad, who treats the song’s fairly blunt central question \u2014 is it so hard to be good? \u2014 as though he’s asking it for the first time and genuinely wants an answer. His voice has the slightly frayed, lived-in quality that separates a singer who’s performing sincerity from one who simply can’t help it. When he gets to the line about a leader who stays when the cameras turn away, he doesn’t oversell it, doesn’t reach for the histrionic high note the arrangement practically begs for. He just lets the words sit there, which is the more difficult and more effective choice.<\/span><\/p> The chorus itself is constructed with an ear for repetition that borders on the incantatory \u2014 “we don’t need more kings or queens, we need someone who sees us” \u2014 the kind of hook built to survive a single listen and burrow in regardless of whether you agree with its politics. And you might not; the lyric flirts with the populist rhetoric it claims to critique, offering vague comfort rather than a program, which is a fair criticism to level at any three-minute pop song asking big questions it has no real intention of answering.<\/span><\/p> But that’s rather beside the point. This is a record about decency dressed as a dancefloor anthem, unfashionable in its earnestness and stubbornly unbothered by that fact.
