Lesser bands treat influence as a costume. Caliber Skies treat it as a vocabulary, and they use it to say something that feels genuinely their own — a song about the long, ugly, necessary work of getting over someone.

What makes “Attention” land is its refusal to sit still. The track lurches between tender verses and thunderous, switch-up choruses with a confidence that belies the band’s youth, and much of that credit belongs to producer Jxckfruit, who by Clifford’s own account helped turn raw riffs and half-formed melodies into something structurally sturdy enough to hold all that emotion without buckling. The song was reportedly built on the spot at Qube Studios, and that spontaneity is audible — nothing here sounds labored over into blandness. The guitars from Jack Walker and Sam Lewis snap and tangle rather than simply harmonize, Michael Brookfield’s bass gives the low end a bruised, propulsive weight, and Tony Thompson’s drumming has the restless energy of someone who has waited a long time to hit things this hard on record.

Lyrically, the song tracks a familiar arc — heartbreak, denial, the slow climb back to self-possession — but Clifford sells it with a rawness that keeps the material from tipping into cliché. He sounds less like he’s performing catharsis than actually working through it in real time, and that honesty is what carries the hooks past mere pastiche and into something you want to shout back at him.

For a first outing, “Attention” is a remarkably assured statement of intent. It doesn’t reinvent pop-punk so much as remind you why the genre mattered in the first place — the hooks, the heartbreak, the sheer physical release of a chorus built to be screamed in a sweaty room. With shows already booked at the Amersham Arms and Facebar, Caliber Skies look primed to prove it live. If this single is any indication, they deserve every bit of the attention its title demands.

Reading has quietly produced its share of noise over the years, but little of it has arrived with the unfiltered nerve of “Attention,” the debut single from Caliber Skies.
