The players he brought in aren’t session mercenaries hired off a list \u2014 by his own account he first crossed paths with several of them years back, at a late-night jam in a honky tonk just over the Mississippi line, the kind of encounter that either evaporates by morning or turns into exactly this. The record wears its Memphis and Muscle Shoals lineage the way a good leather jacket wears its scuffs \u2014 proudly, without apology, and without looking borrowed. You can hear the ghosts of the old Stax sessions rattling around in the low end, the sanctified grit of the Shoals rhythm section humming through the guitar work, but Sidbury never lets the past do his singing for him. Six years into this run, the progression from record to record hasn’t been cosmetic. New Orleans loosened him up; Memphis has toughened him. Each city seems to leave a different callus.<\/span><\/p> Musically, the arrangement is a study in restraint. The horns lean in close and murmur rather than blast. The rhythm section holds its powder until the chorus demands otherwise, then hits with the controlled violence of a preacher saving his best line for the last minute of the sermon. Sidbury phrases just behind the beat, enough to make the whole thing feel conversational \u2014 a story told across a kitchen table rather than performed from a stage.<\/span><\/p> Call it a throwback and you’d be missing the point entirely. Nostalgia acts treat the past like a warm bath to climb back into; Sidbury treats it like a toolkit, useful only insofar as the wiring still works. On “Carry the Load,” it plainly does \u2014 gloriously, unfashionably, undeniably.<\/span><\/p> A small song about a large weight, sung by a man who now sounds like he’s picked up honest calluses in three different cities to earn the right to sing it.
