Both were accomplished, neither was essential. *WAR* feels like the record where the accomplishment curdles into something with actual stakes.

The title alone tells you where the duo’s head is at — not love, not loss in the abstract, but conflict in the very real, very current sense. Across three tracks, Hollow Shift trade in the human cost of division, and to their credit they resist the temptation to make it portentous. This isn’t sixth-form protest music dressed up in fog machines. The press notes promise “haunting melodies, immersive production, and cinematic scale,” and on the evidence of the duo’s catalogue so far, that’s not just PR puffery — Bell’s vocal has always had a way of sounding like it’s being broadcast from somewhere just out of reach, and Zamparas’s production has the patience to let dread build rather than announcing it.

What separates Hollow Shift from the glut of darkwave revivalists currently clogging up algorithmic playlists is restraint. Too many bands in this lane mistake reverb for emotion and a minor key for meaning. Hollow Shift, on this evidence, understand that the genre’s real power is in tension — the gap between the beat that wants you to move and the lyric that wants you to sit with something uncomfortable. That’s the trick “Without Darkness Souls Won’t Move” pulled off, and it’s the trick *WAR* seems built to repeat at a larger scale, three tracks acting almost as movements rather than singles: division, endurance, and whatever uneasy resolution — or refusal of resolution — closes the set.

Hollow Shift have earned the right to be taken seriously enough. Two singles in, they’ve shown they can build a world. *WAR* is the record where they find out whether that world can survive contact with the one outside the studio. On the strength of everything that’s come before, I wouldn’t bet against them — Athens has given us darker myths than this, and Hollow Shift have already proved they know exactly how to tell one.

**WAR was released on June 19, 2026, on all major streaming platforms.**

There’s a particular strain of doom that only the Greeks seem to get right — not the slasher-film dread of American horror synth, nor the polished melancholy of the Scandinavians, but something older, more theatrical, closer to tragedy than terror. Athens duo Hollow Shift have been quietly building a case for themselves as purveyors of exactly that strain, and on their new three-track single *WAR*, they cash the cheque in full.

{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

3
104,112
post-38080","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-album-reviews","tag-electronic","tag-greece
["GET
