Pop music has spent the better part of a decade obsessed with the club, the crowd, the four-in-the-morning taxi home. Terra Renae's "Slightly Faded" refuses that whole mythology. Its pleasure lies in the opposite direction: the sofa, the dimmed lamp, the phone left face-down. It is, in the best sense, an homage to staying in — and it earns that stillness rather than settling for it.

Homecoming songs are two-a-penny, but few manage to sound as lived-in as this one. Allan Jamisen — the Phoenix-based painter turned songwriter — has spent a career sliding between rock, electronica, jazz and spoken word without ever quite settling, and "Milk & Honey" finds him at his most disarming: a man standing on his own doorstep, uncertain whether the key still fits.

Sydney's Cassy Judy has taken a song already loved by those who caught her Broken Heel Festival set and blown it wide open, dressing it in strings, swelling dynamics and a production sheen courtesy of Derek Turner that gives the whole thing genuine widescreen ambition. "I've Come So Far Symphonic" doesn't so much reinterpret the original as excavate it, finding new emotional seams in a track that was already built on hard-won honesty.

There is a particular kind of record that announces itself not through volume but through conviction, and "Concrete Gospel" belongs squarely to that lineage. JC Flow has built a track that treats the street corner as pulpit and the verse as testimony, and the result is a single that earns its title honestly rather than borrowing gravitas it hasn't yet paid for.

Melodic progressive house has spent the last decade drifting toward beige competence, all pads and platitudes, tracks engineered for festival sets rather than headphones. Against that backdrop, "Even Though" arrives with something rarer than polish: patience. AVRION builds the track the way a good short story builds tension — slowly, deliberately, trusting the listener not to reach for the skip button.

Some records announce themselves with a knock at the door. *Perły* arrives instead through the window, cape billowing, orchestra in tow, demanding you rearrange the furniture of your afternoon. Paweł J.P. Hirlok's twelfth album is a lavish, unrepentant thing — twelve tracks that treat restraint as an option to be politely declined.

Somewhere between the third verse and the final chorus, a quiet miracle happens: a song about exhaustion turns into an anthem of arrival. MYRA's debut single "C'est mon tour" doesn't announce itself with fireworks. It creeps in on warm zouk chords, settles into the ribs, and only later reveals how thoroughly it has rearranged the furniture of your afternoon.

Now and again a record arrives that seems to have been carved out of pure need rather than ambition, and "someone" belongs unmistakably to that tradition. This is bedroom music in the truest, most romantic sense of the phrase — not a genre signifier, not a marketing angle, but a literal description of where it was made: on a laptop pushing eight years old, in a room in Western Australia, by a producer who has chosen to remain faceless while the song does all the talking.

Berlin's bedrooms have produced stranger and less lovable things than this. Kate Pending, working with nothing more exotic than patience and a modest home rig, has taken Luke Tangerine's original *Exoplanet* — a track already fond of its own nostalgia — and done the hardest thing a remixer can attempt: she has left it recognisable while making it hers.

There's a particular kind of nerve required to make a record that sounds this nostalgic without ever once sounding lazy about it, and melliejellie has it in spades. *ALL ABOUT U*, her new three-track EP, doesn't so much revive the Y2K sound as excavate it — carefully, lovingly, with a bass player's hands rather than a plugin preset. It's a short record. It is also, track for track, one of the more emotionally honest electronic releases to cross my desk this year.
